Our Focus
The department was formed in 1966 under the leadership of our first Fire Chief, Bob Mickelson. Originally, we operated from a local ranch and our Volunteer Firefighters were property owners in the area that came together to fight fires when they occurred.
The mission and makeup of the organization has changed over the years and now reflects the latest in technology, equipment, and professionally trained Volunteer Firefighters. Our mission is now an all-risk one involving responses to structure fires, wildland fires, vehicle fires, auto accidents, medical emergencies, and many other types of calls for service.
Thanks to the generous donations and support of our tax our residents receive quick response from well trained, well equipped, and dedicated Volunteer Firefighters. Our fire station provides us a centralized location to serve our community. The fire station has three apparatus bays, an office, day room, kitchen, sleeping facilities, and a modern classroom. The station is often staffed with Volunteer Firefighters assigned to shift work. When it is not staffed our Volunteer Firefighters receive emergency dispatches by radio pager and text messaging and respond immediately to the fire station to staff and respond in our apparatus.
We enjoy a superb working relationship with our surrounding fire agencies. Our partners at the Petaluma Cal Fire Station respond alongside us to all of our emergency incidents ensuring a prompt response to your requests for service.
Volunteer Firefighters are carefully screened and put through background checks and physical examinations before beginning to serve their community. They receive extensive training on a weekly basis, training in the latest fire suppression, emergency medical, and rescue techniques.
The Wilmar Volunteer Fire Department relies heavily on the financial support of our community to maintain our high level of service. Fundraisers occur throughout the year offering our community a fun opportunity to attend family functions while supporting their local fire department. Please keep checking the website or Facebook for upcoming events.
We stand ready to respond to your request for service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
